Data Security in an Insecure World
2/1/2008 by Colin Nichols
Data safety and security are passions we all share at HELPnet. Each member of HELPnet has an integral role in
ensuring that your data does not fall into the wrong hands. We take extensive measures to make sure that
institutional and confidential data remain safeguarded.
When files are stored on HELPnet servers, they are secured using a combination of firewalls, computer policy rules and restrictions,
and a blend of hardware and software that restrict the "attack surface" (making it more difficult for hackers to even
know the servers exist). To maintain the integrity of your files, the HELPnet Central Systems team performs nightly backups
of the servers. A fireproof megasafe protects data onsite, and offsite safes provide storage for disaster recovery and archival purposes.
The servers themselves reside in the HELPnet server room (known as "the vault"), a climate-controlled environment restricted to authorized
personnel. Cameras and sensors provide continuous motion-sensitive surveillance.
HELPnet is, and will always be, focused on security. Data security by its nature is both an art and a science that
requires the skill of many different people, each focused on their own areas of expertise. Through training and
experience, HELPnet has continued to find that delicate balance between the two.
